Estimated Characteristics for an AVERAGE Computer in 2012
Designed to last 3 to 5 years and then be replaced


CPU:
Four Cores common, around 3.0 Ghz, direct memory bus (no more front side bus)
Alternate CPU:
Eight Cores emerging for desktop, probably all around 2.5 Ghz
Memory: 4096 MBytes total dual or tri-channel
Case: probably smaller than you think
Keyboard: Still in use...more touch panels
Pointing Device: optical mouse (still with us); other common pointing devices too.
Floppy Disk: Historical artifact of the distant past
Hard Drive: 1 TByte common
Optical Disk Drive: DVD common, probably Blue Ray and other higher density drives too
Video Board: Faster graphics processors maybe even 512 MBytes common, multiple monitors, 3D capable.  GPUs on par with CPUs in speed and cores...even some execution in GPUs
Video Display LCD: 32" or larger, maybe no difference between TV and display.  LED backlight, perhaps Organic displays
Sound Board: most motherboards have sound built-in
Speakers: Probably embedded into the Video Display
Internet Connectivity: ADSL or Cable service probably available in all areas 50 mb download speeds
FIOS (Fiber services more extensive) uses a WAN/LAN router at 50 mb speeds
(Note: Firewall absolutely required and still needed)
LAN: 1Gb Ethernet common, perhaps 4 gb emerging (often on motherboard) 
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional (32-bit on the out; 64-bit on the in)
Windows 8 in Beta maybe, only in 64-bit editions

Linux 64-bit only
Green IT: Still important, greater energy efficiency in power supplies, more recyclable components.
