Refurbished Optiplex Desktop Computing -- A Secondary Market - A Second Life
[Page Under Construction]

We're a big fan of Dell's Optiplex business-class computers when upgrading desktop computing, mostly due to the ability to swap out components without tools, obtaining parts in the secondary marketplace, and the robust market for these business class computers that come off lease / depreciation providing very clean devices.  One can find these professionally recycled often Microsoft authorized refurbished computers on Amazon, at Microcenter, on eBay, and most likely other places too.

However, we generally find the various models / model numbers somewhat confusing and would like to use this page to perhaps help bring a little order to the confusion.  For purposes of discussion, I'll only be covering the Intel processor family which is the one I work with exclusively.

Terms used here:
Previously used:  someone used the computer before and desires to sell it. Most likely tested by them to see if it works, may have removed the OS.
Refurbished:  A more professional testing of the computer, generally replace the main storage drive, perhaps adjust memory (maybe remove some of it to sell at lower price), perform a thorough cleaning of the device, and install/reinstall the operating system.
Authorized Refurbished:  Similar to refurbished but done so via a Microsoft Certified dealer who usually supplies a new product key.

Optiplex Series: The basic motherboard and chassis layout and support infrastructure.  The series appears to change every few years with minor tweaks taking place every product cycle.  Most often the case remains stable during the series, the processor changes within the series, the port layouts may change too.  We're also seeing an evolution of the display connections from VGA in the early days, to HDMI and Display Port in later evolutions.

Windows 11 Supported:  Microsoft has released Windows 11 and supported configurations which includes Intel 8th generation and later processors; also requires TPM 2.0.
Windows 11 NOT Supported:  Systems with TPM 2.0 and Intel 7th generation and earlier may run Windows 11 in non-supported mode...maybe no monthly updates.

Additional Note:
Please pay careful attention to the number and location of USB ports.  Generally the 30X0 series have 4 USB ports in the rear...and that may be a limiting factor in its usage since keyboard, mouse, webcam, printer, scanner, UPS status all consume one USB port each.  Depending upon one's overall design, the 30X0 desktops may be very limiting.  At that point, consider the 50X0 desktops which have more rear USB ports.

Dell Optiplex x020 series - Optiplex Series 4 (ca. 2013)
Models available as refurbished.

Dell's Optiplex line has a good history of devices used in business and a robust reclamation businss has sprung up to acquire off-lease devices, and refurbish them, update the operating system - all perfectly legal - and offer them to small businesses and consumers.

The X020 series of Dell Optiplex computers, ca 2013, is our starting point for this view of refurbished Dell's business-class computing devices.   It consists of the Small Form Factor (SFF), the Mini Tower (MT) configuration (the first time no external drive options), and the Micro configuration - the smallest.  Basically the differences here are the physical size of the computing boxes...with the Mini Tower being the largest, and the most room for various cards and internal accessories; the Micro - with the least amount of room (and desk space) but sufficient for back of screen mounting; and the SFF - the happy medium with some expansion but more desk space required
Windows tablets based on the Intel platform can run the rich variety applications in the Windows ecospace - applications from the Windows store, relative to Android and Apple, are sparce.

Although the x020 series is similar in style to future series, it is distinctly different in physical appearance and internal capabilities.  The x020 series use Intel 4th generation processors, DDR3 memory, and is TPM 1.2 capable.

5020 model front USB: two USB v2, two USB v3 // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI
7020 model front USB: two USB v2, one USB v3, one USB-C // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI

Dell Optiplex Models x040 - Optiplex Series 5 (ca. 2015-16)
Models available as refurbished.

The X040 series of Dell Optiplex computers represents an evolution in box design from the X020 series.  It consists of the Small Form Factor (SFF), the Mini Tower (MT) configuration (the first time no external drive options), and the Micro configuration - the smallest.  Basically the differences here are the physical size of the computing boxes...with the Mini Tower being the largest, and the most room for various cards and internal accessories; the Micro - with the least amount of room (and desk space) but sufficient for back of screen mounting; and the SFF - the happy medium with some expansion but more desk space required.

As we'll see, the x040 series is almost identical to future series, often making it difficult to tell the difference.  The x040 series use Intel 6th generation processors and DDR3 memory and is TPM 2.0 capable (may have to flash update the TPM).  Windows 11 NOT officially Supported due to processor.

3040 model front USB: two USB v2, two USB v3 // rear USB two USB v2, two USB v3 // one Display Port, one HDMI
5040 model front USB: two USB v2, two USB v3 // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI
7040 model front USB: two USB v2, one USB v3, one USB-C // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI

Dell Optiplex Models x050 - Optiplex Series 5 (ca. 2017)
Models available as refurbished; this is my current working environment.

The X050 series of Dell Optiplex computers consists of the Small Form Factor (SFF), the Mini Tower (MT) configuration, and the Micro configuration - the smallest.

For this series there are the 3050 - the simplest physical configuration; the 5050 - the mid range; and the 7050 - the "high" range.  These all use Intel 6th generation processors the i3, the i5, and i7, some use the 7th generation processors.   Most of the configurations on the market today use a variation of the i5-6500, while some, especially the 3050 series, use the i3-6100.

Fundamentially the SFF is virtually identical across the 3050, 5050, and the 7050.  In fact it appears that the only differences between the 5050 and the 7050 are the front USB ports - the 5050 having two v3 and two v2 USB connectors; and the 7050 having two v2 USB, one v3 USB, and one v3 USB-C port.  Both series have four USB v3 ports in the rear, and two USB v2 ports in the rear.  The 5050 and 7050 series also have two Display Ports and one HDMI port in the rear.  In contrast, the 3050 has only two USB v3 ports and two USB v2 ports in the rear, one each Display Port and HDMI port.

Processors:  Intel 6th & 7th generation processors, DDR4 memory, and TPM 2.0 capable (may have to flash update from 1.2).  Windows 11 NOT officially supported.

3050 model front USB: two USB v2, two USB v3 // rear USB two USB v2, two USB v3 // one Display Port, one HDMI
5050 model front USB: two USB v2, two USB v3 // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI
7050 model front USB: two USB v2, one USB v3, one USB-C // rear USB two USB v2, four USB v3 // two Display Ports, one HDMI; ; rear PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports
